In Bitcoin, computers called “miners” race to solve a tricky puzzle to add the next page to everyone’s notebook. The winner gets a reward, and everyone writes the new page in their notebook too. Racing keeps the system honest because no one can just make up the answers—they have to solve the puzzle fairly.
