You have to look at the lowest common denominator. This time period was going through an expansion era. They added several new teams that were really bad in order to grow the league. The good teams beat up on the new teams that had no chance. The statistics show this too. Stats were inflated because of these new teams. Larry Bird and other legends have criticized this decision and commented on how it creates an inaccurate view of player talents. Also, our natural biases prevent us from seeing a clear big view picture. There are legends from the era before Jordan who said that they would destroy the bulls and that the league was easier.
