I'm assuming most openwrt devices will work as long as they have enough memory etc? or is that a bad assumption?
how is the range of that one specifically?

Yes! The current implementation we work on is a openwrt package.
No official tests but mt-3000 is decent. Limiting factor for range these days is local regulations on power output.
