In the 1980s I met a man who had served as a gunner on a US Army Air Corps crew in WW2, flying over Germany. He said he obeyed when he was ordered to strafe and kill anything that moved below, including refugee families trudging with their pathetic possessions along the roads, farmers, women, and schoolchildren. He obeyed -- but he was a broken man for the rest of his life. Another WW2 veteran told me of the capture of some young German soldiers by an American patrol. The commanding officer ordered his men to take the captured German boys up to the regional command center for POW processing, and be back on 15 minutes. The regional command center was over 100 miles away. What he was really telling them was to take them into the woods, murder them, and leave their bodies to the wolves and vultures.
