I believe that the original character limit on Twitter was so that a tweet could be sent in an SMS text message. That was a historical technological constraint that led to interesting creative workarounds, but it seems pretty arbitrary to impose such a limit on future technologies. For example, I enjoy communicating by morse code on amateur radio, but my skill level limits me to about 15 words per minute throughput. This constraint requires some creativity to have meaningful communication, and that can be fun. However, I am glad that my Internet connection can go much faster.
