I’m testing Nostr out before I creating my actual account. I want to do it the “right” or secure way.
Can anyone point me in the right direction on where or how to:
- generate key pairs locally
- best place to setup a lightning wallet
- setup relay to only backup media I only post
- best place for Nostr connect on iOS/MacOs

Hi Nanadaime Hokage, and welcome to #nostr! 🤓
I tried to ⚡️zap you some welcome sats (bitcoin), but you haven't set up a #lightning wallet for your profile yet 🥺 Doing so allows anyone to zap you some sats when they value your contribution, want to say "hi", or any other reason! The easiest option for beginners is to use the in-built wallet in the @YakiHonne app (link below). If you're feeling a bit more adventurous, a dedicated lightning wallet is also a good idea! Some nice options include the @Minibits, @Mysterious Hamster and @Wallet of Satoshi apps. Once you've got it sorted, be sure to post a note including #checkmyaddy and I'll try to zap you again! If you need help, just ask 😊
I can also help people check their #nostr address is working (if they have one). Nostr addresses are not mandatory, but some people like using them to add a personal touch to their profile. Once you've set it up, just post a note including #checkmyaddy and I'll check it again for you. If you like, I can give you one for free at "yourname@minestr.app". Just get in touch! 😊

Welcome to #Nostr !
Suggestion to find whom to follow:
Follow topics using hastags, click on this hashtag: #_rockclimbing, and you will have the option to follow it if using the right mobile or web browser client. A good one to follow is #_introductions and #_askNostr (remove the space after the hastag, I added a space to avoid spamming the community)
Suggestion for Nostr Clients:
If on Android:
@Amethyst is an excellent choice, feature rich, supports privacy, tiktok like feeds, multi user, supports #Amber (more security), #TOR, private chats, excellent look and feel, it is ahead of most clients by far.
@0xchat is a good alternative, more like Telegram, including chat groups, channels and voice and video calls, all encrypted e2e. It is powerful with privacy as well, it has secret chats and it supports Amber, #TOR in the settings "Use SOCKS proxy" (just install Orbot and in the settings be sure it allows background starts you don't need to have it running as VPN). It has a wallet built in and interesting features of its own.
Suggestion for Wallets:
Depends on your technical level and how much time are you willing to spend understanding and setting them up:
1. The impatient with no time to waste and who doesn't care to use custodial wallets:
Go for Wallet of Satoshi (https://www.walletofsatoshi.com/), add it to your profile, it doesn't have the NWC (network wallet connect) setup, but you really don't need it. When you try to zap someone, the wallet will open and the invoice will load, easy and setup free. You are set. (they don't work in USA, unless you use a VPN)
You may try as well https://coinos.io @Mysterious Hamster , rich with features and web based, you can receive emails every time you are zapped too. Very cool wallet, the dev team rocks, they are doing the good work creating more Bitcoin awareness and helping businesses to accept it. It does support ecash and recently started to support #Bolt12, just missing #Amber support to be my favorite (it would make it optional to be non custodial)
2. The curious one with not much technical expertise but eager to learn:
You have few options here to play that are interesting:
2.1. @Minibits (mobile app, you can buy from them your own address like yourname@minibits.cash BOLT11), the app is well polished, user friendly and the devs are hands on, responsive and active in the #Nostr community.
2.2. @Mysterious Hamster , they support #eCash, #Bolt11 and #Bolt12, so you can play here, just beware, you are signing with your own nsec, so for testing, make a new account and play around, that until they support Amber or a similar way to sign in, can't wait.
2.3 @eNuts ⚡️🌰 (eNuts Beta, mobile app, the app is clean and with cool themes, has a message tab, for you to check your private messages, supports #LN and #Cashu, no #Bolt11 support, it is beta, don't play with more than you are willing to lose)
Two good options to play and learn, all support #Cashu and #LN⚡, start learning about #Cashu, IMO a game changer for small payments. Sovereign app offers novelty features I consider a must have, wait until you learn about CLANs and the way sovereign does the recoveries, mind blowing...
3. The tech savvy
3.1 GetAlby running AlbyHub (a bit pricey unless you do all yourself, not my cup of tea, but people in the community loves them)
3.2 npub.cash - get your npub followed by @npub.cash and use it as your wallet address to receive anonymous private #LN payments and #cashu payments. You can pay in the wallet web site for a custom address as well (cool)
3.3 nuts.cash - same as above, just not an option to buy an address, meaning no #Bolt11 support

You can get your own, give it a try, start writing!
Last but not least:
If you are on iOS:
...Why?... never mind...
Enjoy Nostr!

Enjoy Nostr!hello and welcome to nostr. my recommendations
Amber for Android, use this to generate and manage your private key.
Coinos is a great custdodial solution that suppports NWC. If you want non-custodial, it's going to be a bit more complicated.
use a #Haven relay that comes with a Blossom server. you'll need a server/laptop/desktop/raspberry pi for this.
oh. you said iOS. well in that case, scrap the answers for #1 and #2. use Damus and Coinos or Primal with it's built in wallet.
I’d second this, but suggest start9 for an elegant solution to stand up LNBits along with all other moving parts
> generate key pairs locally
Locally you can use nak or a desktop client like Gossip, but I would suggest you to try https://start.njump.me
> best place to setup a lightning wallet
Maybe Coinos or Minibits
> setup relay to only backup media I only post
> best place for Nostr connect on iOS/MacOs
I don't understand the question 😅

@Damus for a client App and use to get the zap button in app.
Nostrudel with Nostore browser extension for web clients using safari
@ZEUS for lighting wallet
Zap Zap Zap
Here is how to create a safe new nostr key pair where the nsec is not entered into the nostr client, but stays secure on an Android device, using #Amber and #Amethyst over tor.
Download Amber apk
(I use the 'free' version)
Open Amethyst
Tap add new account
Tap log in with Amber
Amber app will open
Tap adjust and set your permissions
(I reject generic draft events)
Hit save
Hit grant permissions
Amethyst will open
Tap profile in upper corner
Select use tor/orbot
You now have a nostr profile where the nsec is not entered into the app. You can switch between multiple nostr profiles set up the same way.
I advocate for nostr clients to add NIP46 for sign in.
"The goal of Amber is to have your smartphone act as a NIP-46 signing device without any need for servers or additional hardware...
In addition to native apps, Amber aims to support all current nostr web applications without requiring any extensions or web servers."

What about in an iOS/MacOs ecosystem?
Lightning wallets change a lot so don’t feel tied to any one option. There is a lot to digest when you’re getting started. Happy to share my thoughts and experiences.
There's a lot to digest, and I really appreciate all the helpful input from everyone, including yourself. After posting for setup advice, I received various suggestions, many of which were outside the scope of what I had researched. While I’m grateful for all the support, the sheer number of options is a bit overwhelming for now.
For context, I primarily use iOS/MacOS and own a domain, which I understand might be useful for NIP-05. I also have a Synology NAS, though I’ve heard it might be underpowered for nostr. I wanted to share this to see if it offers more flexibility in getting started with nostr.
I agree they do suck, but its all i got for now. lol
Is it working now?
