Primitive Tech found charcoal from his retort was better quality than that from dowsing. Maybe in part due to forming at a lower temp? Or would dowsed charcoal be preferred for biochar because of steaming effect?

Dowsing seems to really only increase surface area but doesn’t seem to change the surface charge. You really want both. It’s possible to do char at 700 C and that gives tons of surface area but not much CEC. So, steam oxidation of high temperature char can increase the CEC substantially AND you get increased surface area. That’s my theory at least.
