What usually works for me: - find a single interesting subject (usually a tree) - get close (3-5 metres away), directly facing or from a lower ground upwards - use wide to mid range lens, open the aperture wider than usual for landscapes for softer look (f4-6.3 instead of f8-11) - let the fog do the rest, separating your subject from everything else - try different approaches to the postproduction - maybe B&W or desaturated colors

If you only have longer lens that also works but you need to get a bit more distance from the subject. I have found that square crops with the subject directly in the middle, filling up most of the frame, works great.
