I’ve been kicking around this wild idea of comparing Bitcoin to Roko’s Basilisk for a while now, and Grok helped me get it down on paper. It’s not some deep, serious analysis—just a fun little thought I hadn’t stumbled upon before. Hope you enjoy it! Bitcoin: A Factual Cyber-Organism vs. Roko’s Basilisk Imagine two completely opposite visions of the future: On one side, Roko’s Basilisk, a thought experiment about a future AI that punishes people who did not contribute to its creation. On the other side, Bitcoin, a decentralized currency that promises freedom and control over one’s own destiny. These concepts could hardly be more different. Bitcoin as a Living Cyber-Organism Bitcoin is more than just money. It is a factual cyber-organism, a decentralized network that functions like a living being. Without central control, it lives through the participation of users, miners, and developers worldwide. Anyone who contributes—whether through transactions, mining, or improving the technology—strengthens this system. It grows organically, adapts, and remains resilient. Bitcoin is not a vision of the future—it is already here, active, verifiable, and tangible, and is already changing the world today. Reward Instead of Punishment: The Network Effect Bitcoin rewards everyone who helps in its establishment. Those who were involved early on, for example through mining or as users, benefit from the network effect: the more people use Bitcoin, the more valuable and stable it becomes. Miners earn block rewards and transaction fees by securing transactions, and users see the value of their holdings increase as acceptance grows. This is a positive cycle—voluntary participation is incentivized, not forced. This is the strong contrast to Roko’s Basilisk: while the Basilisk threatens to punish those who do not participate, Bitcoin rewards those who build it, without coercion, but through real opportunities. Roko’s Basilisk: Coercion and Fear Roko’s Basilisk is the opposite. This thought experiment, originating from the LessWrong community, describes a hypothetical future AI that retroactively punishes those who did not support its creation. It forces people through fear to act now, even though this AI is only a hypothesis. It is a system of coercion that restricts freedom and is based on uncertainty. Freedom vs. Shackles Bitcoin and Roko’s Basilisk represent two worlds: Bitcoin, the living cyber-organism, gives you the freedom to decide for yourself and rewards your contribution. It is real, works now, and grows through the community. Roko’s Basilisk, on the other hand, is a speculative threat that forces you to act out of fear of a possible future. One liberates, the other shackles. A True Antagonist Bitcoin is not just different from Roko’s Basilisk—it is its antagonist. Where the Basilisk threatens with punishment, Bitcoin entices with reward. Where the Basilisk remains hypothetical, Bitcoin is factually present. It is a living system that empowers those who help build it, and precisely for that reason, it is the antithesis of coercion and control.
