I have been trialing #0xchat for #messaging with a friend for several months. UI is not the greatest, but is serviceable. But delivery was spotty. In my experience some messages never make it.
I recommend anyone interested in #security and #privacy, wrapped in an extremely low-resource and user-friendly package, to try out #deltachat: #e2ee, #decentralized, #opensource, multi-device, multi-account, and works on just about everything. The default on-boarding experience is to provision a randomly-generated account on one of the community-run servers, with no email, phone number, or data collection of any kind. You can also run your own server, or even use any e-mail server with IMAP.
You can easily mirror your entire account on another device, data and configuration, by just scanning a QR code on the same network. Because it is just a thin layer on top of SMTP / IMAP / PGP, the Android apk on F-Droid is, last time I remember looking, just a bit more than 20M.
My wife is no-tech and my kids are pre-teens, but they all instantly switched to Delta Chat on the first try, no pushing or cajoling required. Some years back Delta Chat was a bit buggy, but for the last year it has been completely flawless for us.
