This is my choice of communications worldwide. With a subscription of just $49.95 a month I get unlimited messaging everywhere on the globe. Paired with the Garmin explore application you get mapping as well. You can’t beat this. More folks should consider using this device.

That's still proprietary and you can be locked out of your account pretty easily. I have a similar device for when I hike solo. But it's not something I'd rely on for primary coms.
