If Bitcoin cannot be used for everyday transacting around the world, then it will fall short of that separation, since we will all still be dependent on banks to facilitate payments, and all the regulations that come with that.

Regulations will be designed as a service rather than a constraint. They will probably be designed and implemented by private parties rather than governments or large state-aligned institutions. By appreciating faster than every other money out there, bitcoin will make onerous, unnecessary regulations too costly to enforce. This is the subtle but critically important point and why NGU is all that matters. NGU aligns the incentives of consenting parties.
