I've heard the exact opposite take (well, minus the fat part, everyone knows that), so this is interesting to me.

The androgyny was off the charts. I'd forgotten about that, but watching some flashback documentaries and everyone looked androgynous. Both from their physiognomy, makeup, and from the fashion.
I guess they died out.
You have to remember that the historical pics and videos people show on the Internet (look, everyone looked like a movie star!) is often showing views of people in the upper class. I was in the working class, so I was seeing normal people.
People were thinner, but that often actually made their faces and figures less appealing. A minimum of fat hides asymmetry, reduces facial aging, and makes womens' figures curvier. Women had no boobs.
I don't trust westoid documentaries about that part of the world.
Their information is all second or third hand.
What's happening now in Japan is far worse but the American company GE running it won't shut it down.
And what can happen still will make Chernobyl look like child's play.
At least the Soviet were smart enough to cement it over asap to limit the spread.
The Japanese are just poisoning us daily for over a decade..
