You could use an M2 SSD in a PCIe adapter instead of a dedicated M2 slot on the motherboard
“If you've already stuffed the slots in your motherboard full of PCIe SSDs, you might be wondering what's the best way to add more. While you could buy larger capacities and swap them out, several manufacturers make PCIe add-in cards that can add one, two, or a whole bunch of M.2 NVMe drives to your system.”
This looks like a very interesting option. My mother board only has two M2 slots, but the problem is when I use one of them, that eliminates two of my SATA connectors. Plugging an M2 NVMe drive instead into a free PCIe slot, could make a lot of sense.
The linked article also shows what sort of performance impact this may have versus the dedicated M2 slot.
