Decided to give the BSD Challenge a try on one of these two Chromebooks. I got them from the nixbook guy at LinuxFest Northwest. One is Arm and the other is Intel. Both only pull about 5ish watts at idle so I can go either way.
I will probably go with the Intel one cause the Arm(Tegra K1 SoC) requires modifying the boot image to use the chromeos recovery image. Or I can go hardmode and flash the SPI chip to allow unsigned bootimages... So yeah Intel with mrchromebook bios wins.
Oh yeah also looks like running off battery is shot on both so I'm running with my Anker battery with 20v barrel jack to usb-C PD cables, but looks like one battery might work so fingers cross... If not, eBay it is...
Also (Parden my cussing) FUCK YOU HP AND YOUR FUCKING HIDDEN SCREWS! You can tell HP didn't want your to repair these books easily. I will say though most of the parts where interchangeable except for the motherboards and screen hinges cause the Intel one NEEDED a Kingsington lock(LIKE THOSE EVER FUCKING WORK), But still... FUCK YOU HP.
Overall, I'm hoping to get the hardware stuff done tomorrow and then the real fun begins. Installing BSD and configuring it. Yay...
I can try installing PostmarketOS on the arm one in the meantime. Apparently that works out of the box. So we will see how this experiment goes.
Anyways y'all have a great night or day depending on where you are in the globe!
