If one figure encapsulates the fight for individual conscience against authority, it is Jan Hus (c. 1372-1415). He was a Catholic priest, philosopher, and reformer who is celebrated not just as a religious figure, but as a «champion of freedom in the late middle ages» . <br/> <br/> His story is one of profound moral courage. Hus spoke out against the corruption and practices of the Church, advocating for reform and for the Bible to be preached in the language of the people. He was excommunicated and summoned to the Council of Constance to defend his views. Despite being promised safe passage, he was imprisoned, tried for heresy, and given a chance to recant his beliefs to save his life . <br/> <br/> His refusal to betray his conscience is his defining act. His defiance is famously captured in the pose and words attributed to him at the stake, similar to Martin Luther's later stand: «Here I stand; I can do no other» . His execution in 1415 made him a martyr, and he was remembered
