FIFA is expected to make more than $15 billion during the World Cup period 2013–2026. It pays about 4% in taxes in this low-tax haven called Switzerland. The winning team, Spain, made $50 million, of which the team itself receives half which also will be partly taxed in the U.S., with up to 30% federal withholding for foreign athletes. In addition, there will likely be further tax in Spain or in the country of the players’ residence. It’s laughable that an organization that simply organizes an event makes vastly more money than the athletes, who are the reason so many people watch it in the first place, yet they get chump change.
