I'm reminded of how, when growing up, it was actually the other way around. The boys were in charge of making sure there is bread on the table for breakfast. That usually meant waking up earlier and going to the bakery or the corner shop.
The money (usually 200 Francs for two baguettes) would already be on the table in the living room, or if it was missing, we would have to knock on my parents' door. They would know immediately the purpose of our request and come out, already holding the money in the hand...
