55. What is an “American dual citizen”?
An American dual citizen is a person who has two or more citizenships, one of which is American.
For example, if you're born an American and you obtain St. Kitts citizenship by investment, you are now an American dual citizen (American-Kittsian). If you're born a Colombian and then naturalize in the United States, you're also now an American dual citizenship (Colombian-American).
The term matters because it lets us hone in on specific dual citizenship legal issues that pertain specifically to Americans who are dual citizens.

Many people are under the mistaken impression that getting citizenship after a requisite period of residency is a mere formality.
Absolutely not.
There are a myriad of other issues and eligibility criteria that can and do stymie a naturalization application based on a period of residency, even if that is a “golden visa” residency.
Part of this misconception can be blamed on some (not all) on golden visa salesmen (who masquerade as “consultants”) eager to close the sale. They speak as if it’s all but a forgone conclusion that you’ll be a citizen after X number of years.
BTW, Bukele’s residency by investment program in El Salvador should be viewed with the same caution if it ever comes into existence.
Don’t take citizenship after a period of residency as a given if you pursue a “golden visa” (residence by investment). Even if your aim is eventual citizenship, understand there are serious risks to your naturalization eligibility.
I’ll write an article fleshing out the risks soon.

To get 2nd citizenship, the overwhelming majority of the time, you have to “pay” in one of 3 ways:
1. With money - citizenship by investment.
2. With time - citizenship after period of residency (usually 2-6 years)
3. With effort in research (+ luck) - citizenship by descent.
Pick your poison.
Note: there are 3 other relatively narrow eligibility criteria - a) citizenship by exception, b) by religion or c) by marriage.

*Very rough price ranges for different kinds of citizenship (including attorney fee and costs) for my firm. 👇
Variability within the range depends on a) country, and b) case difficulty/work quantity).
1. Citizenship by investment. ($120k-$900k)
2. Citizenship by descent ($6k-12k)
3. Citizenship by naturalization after period of residency ($5k-$10k)
Initial consultation: $250, to screen you for options, explain the process, timeline, costs and most importantly, any problematic case issues (if present) and your chances of success.
Note: some citizenship by descent cases take more work and additional fee just to SCREEN for eligibility, given their complexity and that oftentimes several ancestral documents must be obtained even to determine eligibility.
If your case is outside of my wheelhouse, I try to refer to a trusted colleague who specializes in what you need. If I don’t have a trusted colleague that handles your need, I say so. 👍

Are you still subject to U.S. law as an American dual citizen OUTSIDE the United States?

If you ever learn one ancient language to be able to read badass texts in their original, which will it be?
Some candidates:
- Latin
- Ancient Greek
- Hebrew
- Aramaic
- Sanskrit
- Akkadian
- Avestan
- Median
- Sumerian
I think if it ever happens for me, it’ll be Latin or Avestan.
A good heuristic I’ve noticed is that if you hear someone say or write “collecting passports” to refer to applying for 2nd or 3rd citizenship, you’re probably listening to a travel writer or influencer.
In other words, someone who’s NOT an expert in the business of…getting people 2nd and 3rd citizenship.
We don’t talk like that because experts know passport ≠ citizenship.
A passport is a travel document that’s usually (but not always) proof of citizenship. Huge difference. Not semantic.
Citizenship is what we get people and it comes with a whole lot more legal rights and obligations than just a travel document.
Conflation of passport and citizenship is like a big red siren over someone’s head saying “I only understand this stuff superficially, if at all.”
That’s fine for newbies learning about #selfsovereignty but not fine for people trying to hold themselves out as experts or citizenship “consultants.”

There’s such an astounding amount of BS propounded by travel influencers larping as citizenship experts that I may have to start taking videos one by one and breaking down all the false info to set viewers straight.
I get that we’d all like self sovereignty and multiple citizenship to appear simple and attainable but the reality is this stuff gets complicated.
If I can do it without coming across as mean-spirited, I’ll probably start.

In the world of global mobility, there exist these unusual little #mobilityassets I call “semi-citizenships.”
Even #passportbros and other dual citizenship aficionados hardly know they exist.
They come with some rights of citizenship but not all, and they are not exactly residencies either. 👇

Being a dual/multiple citizen is one negative factor in a multi-factor test for U.S. federal security clearance. 👇
Difficulty getting this clearance (if it applies to you) is one of the 4 potential drawbacks for Americans considering dual citizenship.
