Remember, remember the 5th of November!
Nearing the finish line. ⚒️
I’ve marked out the areas I need to focus on tomorrow for some final details, and then comes sanding and some finishing choices I need to make. Red enamel in the eyes might look nice. And maybe gold leaf for the background. Tbd..
Progress continues…
Working in such a low profile has definitely been interesting but challenging. See a side view in the second pic for reference.
Still have more carving to do, but this piece will be done soon and available for bidding in the upcoming auction November 5th-7th at
Progress from today.
The nose still needs evening out and I haven’t tackled the eyes or mouth yet, but it’s starting to come together.
See the second photo to compare to yesterday’s stopping point.
Back to work on this piece.
Aiming to finish it in the next couple of days in time for the auction at nartamoto.com starting on the 5th of November.
Stay tuned for more updates.
Progress update🍂
So far so good. Still have a bit of sanding and filing to do around the leaves. After that I plan to carve the leaves to make them more curved. Basically reduce their profile so they’re thinner and closer to the “water.” After that I’ll redraw and carve the veins. I’m still debating the finish I’ll use on the leaves but I’m leaning towards an enamel so I can achieve realistic colors.
Coming along nicely. 🍂
This piece won’t really come together until the very end though- sanding the ripples to round the edges and the water surface to a high polish, the veins of the leaves, their curvature and how their edges affect the “water’s” surface tension… I’m also considering whether I’ll add gold and copper leaf to the leaves or maybe even use paint to make them even more realistic… still a lot left to do.
Having a lot of fun with this piece and I’ve only just started. I can already tell this is going to turn out really special.
If you’re just seeing this for the first time… the idea here is to carve the surface of a pond, a ripple in the water with floating leaves. 🍂
Hey all. For anyone interested, the recent pieces I've been sharing are now up for sale.
Check it out and please share with anyone who might be interested.

This is going to be a fun challenge 🍂
I want to capture the surface of a pond, autumn leaves floating, a ripple of water spreading out…
After completing the small aspen leaf carving I wanted to do more leaves… and I’ve always wanted to try carving a ripple of water. I’ve seen it done before and it looks deceptively simple.
Making progress but still a ways to go. Pretty much everything besides the tip of the nose needs to get carved deeper. And obviously with more detail/precision.
This tile was maybe a little over an inch thick to start, which makes this difficult. I need to create the illusion of more depth than there actually is..
