Wow, Apple Intelligence is something else! I did a sytem update on my Mac and it installed updates. Then it rebooted and said Apple Intelligence. So I went into settings, went to Apple Intelligence, and turned off the switch. The switch turned itself back on and greyed itself out. Clicking it does nothing. Intelligence updates are still downloading. Also the red X in the upper left of the window greyed out. I can't close the settings panel. I think SkyNet just owned my Mac.
I switched to KDE recently (very nice but tries to do too much) and also updated gossip to a newer egui. I thought the newer egui had a window positioning bug. After about 2 hours of testing and research I have discovered that KDE/Wayland doesn't allow windows to position themselves yet. 🤦
GOSSIP unstable: I have updated egui (by one major release, not to the latest) and there may be some odd behaviors (like scrolling instantly stops when your mouse exits the main area). I have also changed how repainting works: * There is no fallback "repaint every second" any more. It can sit for long periods without any repaints if nothing changes. * There is no "exception for scrolling" anymore on FPS limiting. So FPS limiting makes scrolling, animation, and fades look "choppy" below 30 FPS. Default for max FPS is now 60. Note that it was rendering "as fast as possible" previously as an exception, so this isn't really rendering more often, it's just more honest. Many of you will have this setting at 15 (due to the new minimum) and will want to bring it up to 30 or 60. * Repaints only happen when some code asks for them. I probably have not found all the places where repainting should be requested, so please let me know if you notice something not updating when it should be updating.
Yesterday I learned that USB SSDs suffer data fade (bit rot) after about 1-2 years. But you can avoid this just by plugging them in for a few hours at least once a year. This lets the controller refresh all the weak leaky data.
I built a new server today and moved chorus.mikedilger.com. Sorry for any disruption (I was lazy and didn't do a no-downtime swapover).
America needs to lower the minimum wage for migrant workers and also streamline visas for them and start issuing huge numbers of these or else the prices of food and housing construction is going to skyrocket. I'm not against the crackdown on illegal immigration. But can't sensibly do one without the other. Of course I have no dog in the race, I'm just calling it like I see it.
