Did Cardinal Robert Prevost -- "Pope Leo XIV" -- give any reasons for choosing "Leo"? - It was Pope Leo X who authorized the sale of indulgences that led to Martin Luther's 95 Theses and eventually the Protestant Reformation. - It was Pope Leo XIII (the "Social Pope") who wrote the encyclical "Rerum novarum," which condemned both socialism and laissez-faire capitalism. - The much earlier "St." Leo the Great helped prepare for the definition of Chalcedon (451 A.D.) BCO Chapter II [The Church]( 1. Jesus Christ, being now exalted far above all principality and power, has erected in this world a kingdom, which is his church. 2. The universal church visible consists of all those persons, in every nation, together with their children, who make profession of saving faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and promise submission to his commandments. 3. In accordance with the teaching of Scripture, the many members of this church universal are to be organized in local and regional churches, confessing a common faith and submitting to a common form of government. 4. The work of the church, in fellowship with and obedience to Christ, is divine worship, mutual edification, and gospel witness. The means appointed by Christ through which the church does this work include the confession of the name of Christ before men; the exercise of fellowship in encouraging one another; the reading, teaching, and preaching of the Word of God; praying; singing; fasting; administering baptism and the Lord's Supper; collecting and distributing offerings; showing mercy; exercising discipline; and blessing the people. #Christian #catholic #Protestant #Reformed #Presbyterian #grownostr
