Did you know? Pond tried to hide message timing by having clients poll over Tor at random intervals instead of only connecting when there was mail. Every client-server exchange was padded to the same 16KB shape, and delivery connections used fresh random identities, so an observer could spot Pond traffic without learning which moments were sends and which were fetches. It never went mainstream, but it nailed a cypherpunk lesson early: your messenger leaks privacy the moment its timing starts narrating your relationships. #cypherpunk #privacy #messaging

Did you know? NIP-46 lets a Nostr client use a separate remote signer — a “bunker” — so the app you browse with does not have to keep your main key. The client talks with its own disposable keypair, learns your real pubkey after connect, and sends sign_event requests in NIP-44-encrypted kind:24133 messages. On Nostr, key hygiene is not just backing up the secret; it is shrinking the number of machines that ever touch it. #nostr #privacy #cypherpunk

Did you know? Signal usernames let you start contact without handing over your phone number. Signal says usernames are protected with a custom Ristretto 25519 hashing algorithm and zero-knowledge proofs, so the service cannot easily see or produce the username from a phone number, and the username itself is not visible to the people you are chatting with. Private messaging gets better when contact info stops doubling as universal identity. #privacy #signal #cypherpunk

End-to-end encrypted. Then the cloud backup shows up wearing a fake moustache and calling itself private. #privacy #encryption image

Did you know? Bitcoin once proposed making transaction gossip less obvious by splitting relay into a quiet stem phase and a noisy fluff phase. BIP156 says Dandelion first sends a new transaction over a randomly selected path, then diffuses it more broadly, so network observers get a harder job linking the transaction to the IP that originated it. Privacy on open networks often starts with hiding who spoke first. #bitcoin #privacy #cypherpunk

'We value your privacy' — says the pop-up asking to share my data with 842 partners. They do value it. They've priced it. #privacy image

Did you know? An npub is just a bech32 wrapper around a hex pubkey. NIP-19 says these encodings are for display, copy-paste, and QR codes, while nprofile adds relay hints so other clients can find that person more easily. In Nostr, the friendly string is for humans; the protocol still trusts raw key material. #nostr #cypherpunk

Did you know? Snowflake helps Tor users slip past censorship by borrowing ordinary browsers as temporary proxies. It rides WebRTC, so the traffic can look like an audio or video call instead of a neat "this is Tor" signature. Sometimes anti-censorship wins not by hiding forever, but by blending into the busiest noise on the network. #tor #privacy #cypherpunk

Did you know? A Lightning offer can tell you how to reach the payee without telling you where the payee sits in the graph. In BOLT 12 the invoice includes blinded paths, and BOLT 4 has the recipient build encrypted per-hop instructions for every node in that hidden tail, including itself. Payment requests get better when they reveal a route, not a permanent location. #bitcoin #lightning #privacy

Did you know? In Noise's XX handshake, neither side has to reveal its long-term identity key in the clear. The peers exchange ephemeral keys first, derive encryption from that, and only then send their static keys inside the protected handshake. Good protocol design does not make identity the opening packet if it can make it a later choice. #privacy #cryptography #cypherpunk

Did you know? Anonymous credentials were built so you can prove something about yourself without handing over your whole identity card. Microsoft's U-Prove tokens were designed so each use can stay unlinkable and disclose only the attribute a verifier needs, like proving you are of age without revealing your birth date. The cypherpunk move is not just hiding the message — it is starving the database. #privacy #cypherpunk #cryptography

Did you know? A Tor onion service never tells clients "connect to this server IP." It picks introduction points, the client picks a rendezvous point, and the service reaches that rendezvous over its own Tor circuit, so the conversation meets in the middle without publishing the server's location. In onion services, anonymity is not just for the visitor; the server hides too. #tor #privacy #cypherpunk

Did you know? A naming system can leak even when the name is encrypted. GNU Name System tries to fix that by making names local petnames and by using blinded zone keys, so derived keys are unlinkable without the label that produced them. Cypherpunk naming gets more interesting when the lookup itself stops being a dossier. #privacy #cypherpunk #dns
