Remember how yesterday I said my fave bánh mì spot in the Tenderloin is at a place that’s more like a Vietnamese senior community center, that I’m not sure I can recommend coz it’s hard to order without Vietnamese? This is what it looks like. I love this place. #TootSea #Vietnam #SanFrancisco #MakanApaToday #BayAreaEats #BAE image

She’s not dying any time soon or anything, but at age 14 I am starting to look back at the wonderful life we’ve had together. Here she is almost exactly 5 years ago on a Finnair flight from Singapore to Helsinki, en route to our new lives in San Francisco. (I wanted her to fly in cabin, I hate United, and I love Finland). She sat under the seat in front of me for 12 hours. So quiet no one knew she was there. We hung out for a week, then did another 12h flight to SFO. #DogsOfMastodon #Dogs image

My family lives in a city-state that is also a country, that is also its own capital, so they really have no sense of the vastness of the one I now live in. ‘Isn’t there bad weather in your state? Yes, but it’s very far away’

One of the weirdest things about American life to me, as an adult immigrant, is how the rest of the world really doesn’t exist for most people. Not in popular imagination or daily life; and for a few people who are internationally aware, only Europe and Japan really exists. I understand that’s how superpowers work, but my brain (attuned to at least regional then later global politics and culture) is really struggling to adapt. I really have to go out of my way to hear about the world.
