Usually I do not write much about this topic here, but I have been doing a lot of street photography for the last 20 years. This is one of my favorite photos ever, taken around 2007/2008. I was on a mission trip in the state of Piaui, one of the poorest states in Brazil. We did community work and gave some classes on water purification and other relevant topics. Looking back, I think this was one of the most important experiences of my life: experiencing ABSOLUTE POVERTY left a mark on my soul. It helped me to refuse to ever complain about irrelevant things. It helped me understand how lucky we are when we have the basics (shelter, food, etc.). And it gave me this strange feeling that nothing else makes sense except doing something to reduce human suffering. I wonder what happened to the kids in the picture. Maybe one day I will go back there and try to find out...
