We share daily father-son dialogues explaining Bitcoin on Twitter and here on nostr. On Mondays, we send out a recap newsletter with the coolest things Dad has learned during the past week. If you are new to Bitcoin, this will help you get started. If you are already on your journey, this will help you stay up to date, keep away from scams, and avoid the common pitfalls. Our DM is open for your Bitcoin related questions.
image Dad: Son, what is a "block explorer"? Son: Hi Dad, A block explorer is a website, a tool, that is used to view bitcoin transaction details, unspent transaction outputs (UTXO) and addresses online. Dad: So, is it something like a blockchain browser?? Son: Yeah, a blockchain explorer can be used to follow transactions in the graph until they end in an unspent output, an UTXO. These UTXOs are the actual bitcoin, the "data which have value". Dad: Let's play a game. Who will find the address with the most bitcoins – you or me? #Bitcoin
image Dad: Son, I am reading the "Bitcoin white paper" right now and try getting my head around this: "The network timestamps transactions by hashing them into an ongoing chain of hash-based proof-of-work, forming a record that cannot be changed without redoing the proof-of-work." Son: Hi Dad, A "hash" is like a "digital fingerprint" of any collection of data. Each new fingerprint builds on a previous one and adds a chain link segment. Dad: Bitcoin seems to be a very sophisticated system. Son: Dad, that's just the tip of the iceberg. #Bitcoin
image Dad: Son, Mum and I are wondering how the kids are doing. The time goes by so fast ;-) Son: Hi Dad, The boys are stronger than yesterday. They know more than yesterday. They hold more sats than yesterday. Dad: Like father, like son. #Bitcoin
image Son: Dad, if Bitcoin fails, I'm fucked. We are fucked. Dad: Son, all of us, I guess. #Bitcoin
image Dad: Son, how can I improvement my online security level? Son: Hi Dad, Use a password manager. This is the biggest single security improvement a person can make. I never click on hyperlinks in emails. Copy-verify-paste them. I use KeePass to store my usernames, passwords, and links to the login pages for each service. Dad: Where can I get this "password safe" app? Son: There you go, #Bitcoin
image Dad: Son, when will all 21 million BTC be mined? Son: Hi Dad, All 21M bitcoins will be mined by 2140, but more than 98% will be mined by 2030. Act accordingly and stack some sats today, tomorrow and the day after. #Bitcoin
image Son: Dad, don't forget to invest in your friendships. Tell your friends about Bitcoin today. Dad: Son, what is the easiest way to get someone to start using Bitcoin? Son: Dad, onboarding friends to Bitcoin is like 1-2-3. 1. Install BlueWallet on friend's mobile phone. 2. Create a wallet and get a receiving address. 3. Scan the QR code and send $10 worth of sats. Dad: So, it costs me $10 to orange pill a friend? Son: Dad, orange pilling is priceless! #Bitcoin
image Dad: Son, the "Great Wave off Kanagawa" is incredible. Son: Hi Dad, Absolutely! It reminds me of Hyperbitcoinization. Dad: Oh, you mean the wave symbolizes Bitcoin's immense transformative power? Son: Exactly! Just like the wave disrupts the scene, hyperbitcoinization disrupts the world. #Bitcoin
image Dad: Son, why should I invest in Bitcoin? I do not understand it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Son: Hi Dad, Nobody understands Bitcoin when they start. Dad: Truth. Son: Two other things are true: 1. Nobody has enough Bitcoin. 2. Nobody understands Bitcoin completely. So, you are in good company. ;-) #Bitcoin
image Dad: Son, what if the Opendime is lost? Does the Opendime also have recovery words? Son: Hi Dad, An Opendime is made to change hands, like cash. The private key is generated on the device, and without breaking the seal by pushing a pin through the hole marked on the back of the Opendime, there is no way to back it up. Dad: And if I break the seal? Son: Then the private key will be revealed in the private-key.txt file and QR code image. There is no way back, and once unsealed, you should move the funds into another wallet. #Bitcoin
image Son: Dad, I should have paid more attention to Bitcoin in the beginning and I should have bought more. Dad: Son, don't blame your past. Be grateful for what it taught you. I could say the same... Now I am just glad I changed my mind on Bitcoin and saved my savings. #Bitcoin
image Dad: Son, I just got my Coldcard hardware wallet today. The bag is really special. Pretty sure it has more security feature than a banknote. Son: Hi Dad, Not sure about that one. ;-) But yes, the device seems well protected. However, I recommend you download the latest firmware from Coinkite, check it and install it on your Coldcard manually. And also inspect the device visually, and verify the bag number. Dad: Son, why all the effort, it is "just a calculator". Son: Haha. Anyway, I will send you a tutorial later. #Bitcoin
image Son: Dad, get your coins off exchange! Dad: Son, I did that already. Son: Get more and get those coins off exchange. #Bitcoin
image Son: Dad, here's the four-point plan to not screw up with your bitcoin. 1. Never store a 12/24 recovery seed words online, not even encrypted 2. Never type a 12/24 recovery seed words onto any online device 3. Only enter the 12/24 recovery seed words directly onto a hardware wallet 4. Only record the 12/24 recovery seed words onto durable physical medium such as a Cryptosteel Capsule or a Cryptosteel Cassette. Dad: Son, sounds like a plan. #Bitcoin
image Son: Dad, in the future, you will have to get on a waiting list to buy a fraction of a bitcoin. Dad: Son, I am not made for waiting lists. I prefer to get my fraction right now. #Bitcoin
image Son: Dad, did you know that there are 1,461,501,637,330,902,918,203,684,832,716,283,019,655,932,542,976 Bitcoin private keys? Dad: Son, guess which ones are mine. ;-) Jokes aside. How likely is it that someone could guess one? Son: In short, extremely unlikely. Dad: Extremely unlikely? So, it is possible?! Son: Extremely unlikely because there are more Bitcoin private keys than atoms in the universe. Dad: Okay, somehow reassuring. #Bitcoin
image Dad: Son, history teaches us that we do not learn from history. Son: Hi Dad, I understand the frustration with humanity repeating its mistakes, but I think history isn't just a mirror of our failures; it's a reflection of our potential. It shows that while we often stumble, we also have the capacity to grow, adapt, and improve. It's up to us to choose whether to repeat history or learn from it to create a better future. And now, we have Bitcoin, a new chapter in the history that challenges the way we think about value, values and time. #Bitcoin
image Dad: Son, why does it take so long to have my new Umbrel ready to use? It is syncing since hours now. Son: Dad, again, it's a question of time preference. A full node, what your Umbrel is, is a program that fully validates transactions and blocks. Everything from the Genesis block to today's latest block must be downloaded and validated first. This is the only way to be sure that you have a valid copy of the blockchain running. Dad: Ok, I see. How can this be accelerated? Son: A fast internet connection and a fast SSD disk helps to speed up the initial sync, however ... You'll have to be patient, Dad. ;-) #Bitcoin
image Dad: Son, if you are feeling down, text mum. Son: Dad, yes, I would – and buy some bitcoin. #Bitcoin
image Dad: Son, is there a difference between Bitcoin and bitcoin (upper-/lowercase 'b')? I have seen both spellings in publications. Son: Hi Dad, When expressed using a small 'b', the word bitcoin usually refers to the unit of currency. Dad: And the uppercase 'B' ? Son: Bitcoin with a capital 'B' is typically associated with Bitcoin, the protocol and payment network or to refer to the ecosystem as a whole. Dad: So, "Saving in bitcoin is investing in Bitcoin." Son: "Stacking sats makes Bitcoin better." #Bitcoin
