We share daily father-son dialogues explaining Bitcoin on Twitter and here on nostr. On Mondays, we send out a recap newsletter with the coolest things Dad has learned during the past week. If you are new to Bitcoin, this will help you get started. If you are already on your journey, this will help you stay up to date, keep away from scams, and avoid the common pitfalls. Our DM is open for your Bitcoin related questions.
image Son: Dad, did you know there are 241 valid seed phrases that contain only the same BIP39 word? Dad: Son, it must have taken hours to test them all. Son: LOL, no Dad, I used a little Python script for that. Interestingly, the longer the seed (12, 15, 18 vs. 24 words), the fewer valid combinations there are. Of course, these seeds are for fun and testing ONLY! Dad: Interesting! 24x bacon is my personal favorite. :-) Son: Damn, I was just going to use that seed. ;-) #Bitcoin
image Dad: Son, what does "Few." mean? Son: Hi Dad, Few? Dad: Yes, few. Son: Few understand this. #Bitcoin
image Dad: Son, two bitcoin are better than one. Son: Hi Dad, That's true, but one is better than none. Dad: I am happy to hold an entire one. #Bitcoin
image Dad: Son, so, Bitcoin is open-source? What does this mean exactly? Son: Hi Dad, The term open source refers to something anyone can independently review, modify and share because its design is publicly accessible. Dad: So, everything is public and there are no secrets, except your own? Son: Your private keys are private, of course. Everything else is public and auditable. In this beautiful asymmetry lies the true power of Bitcoin. #Bitcoin
image Son: Dad, I'm grateful that you taught me this: "Good habits and simple rules, if applied, can positively change your whole life." Dad: Son, how did you put that to use? Son: Numerous ways, but one of them is stacking sats, no matter what happens. Dad: Son, that seems to have paid off. #Bitcoin
image Dad: Son, on a scale from 1 to 100,000,000 how satisfied is a bitcoin? Son: Hilarious, Dad. #Bitcoin
image Dad: Son, how long does it take to pay using Lightning? Son: Hi Dad, A LN payment takes only a fraction of a second. Dad: Wrong! Although payments take only a couple of seconds, you usually need at least two minutes to discuss with the counterparty how fucking awesome the Lightning Network is. Budget your time accordingly, son! Son: LOL. Thanks for your advice, Dad. :-D #Bitcoin
image Dad: Son, who is the best Bitcoin custodian? Son: Hi Dad, The most qualified bitcoin custodian is you. Dad: Son, this is highly debatable. Son: Think about it. No one is as incentivized to protect your bitcoin, your privacy and yourself as you are. #Bitcoin
image Dad: Son, do not respect the people who do not respect time. Son: Dad, don't respect the people who don't respect bitcoin. Dad: Time is money, as the saying goes. #Bitcoin
image Dad: Son, what do you want for your birthday? Son: Dad, I already have everything. :) Dad: Tell us, what would make you happy? Son: Bitcoin Dad: The same thing again and again? Nah. What else? Son: It's not "the same". Every UTXO is unique, and the transaction will live on the timechain forever. Dad: Like a diamond. Diamonds are forever... Son: Bitcoin is actually forever. #Bitcoin
image Dad: Son, is it "cool storage" or "cold storage"? Son: Hi Dad, It's "cold storage". The term does not matter, as long it's "your storage" and "your storage" is offline. #Bitcoin
image Son: Dad, volatility is _______________. Dad: Son, that must be "nerve-wracking". Volatility is nerve-wracking. Son: For me, volatility is "the price for being early". #Bitcoin
image Son: Good morning, Dad. Bitcoin is in top form today, as yesterday, and the day before. I hope you are as well. Dad: Son, good morning! There is nothing to complain about. :-) #Bitcoin
image Son: Dad, did you know Bitcoin in self-custody has no counterparty risk. Dad: I am aware. #Bitcoin
image Dad: Son, what is the legal form of Bitcoin? Son: Hi Dad, Bitcoin is an open protocol, not a company. Companies come and go. On the other hand, once a protocol gets established, it almost never changes. We only use one internet protocol (TCP/IP) and one email protocol (SMTP). Dad: That is true. The analogy is interesting.... Son: It looks like the default protocol for a sovereign platform is Bitcoin. #Bitcoin
image Son: Dad, do you know that the next halving is estimated at the end of March 2024? Dad: Son, they are going to cut my portfolio in half?! Son: First, there is no "they", Dad, and, second "no". Bitcoin is a protocol, and the protocol does its thing. One of those things is the "halving" that happens every 210,000 blocks. In the 2024 halving, the block reward will drop from 6.25 BTC per block to 3.125 BTC. Dad: I remember again. With each new block, new coins are put into circulation. This happens every 10 minutes. Son: Every 10 minutes on average. The halving brings a significant decrease in fresh supply.Think about how precious each and every unit of Bitcoin is. #Bitcoin
image Dad: Son, is the Bitcoin price artificially suppressed? One Bitcoin should already be worth many times more, as rare as Bitcoins are. Son: Hi Dad, Yeah, buy as much as possible of the artificially low-cost asset, and move it off the exchange into cold storage. They may be able to delay the death of the dollar, but Bitcoin's settlement properties make this type of attack impossible to win. The question is not "if", but "when". Dad: At the same time, one Bitcoin is already so expensive that it will be impossible for most to own a whole coin. #Bitcoin
image Dad: Son, how do you generate these 24 seed words? Do you pick random words from your head? Son: Hi Dad, This doesn't work that way. First, these words are special words, taken from the "BIP39 Word List". Second, picking words from your head is not random and therefore a bad idea. I don't always generate a new seed, but when I do, I use dices. Dad: Why dices? How does this even work? Son: Dice rolls provide entropy. You could also flip a coin as a source for randomness. The process is simple and is available in BlueWallet (advanced mode), SeedSigner and in every Coldcard. #Bitcoin
image Son: Dad, when it comes to internet money, you should never use, generate or input private keys online. Dad: Son, you have already mentioned that. #Bitcoin
image Dad: Son, your best teacher is your last mistake. Son: Hi Dad, I disagree with your take. Bitcoin is the best teacher. #Bitcoin
