Internet failover testing for my new node. I’ve solved the Internet failover issue I was having by using a virtual router running on a cheap VPS. Internet traffic for my node will be routed over 2 x VPN tunnels from my home routers to this virtual router, one VPN tunnel over each Internet service. BGP running over the VPN tunnels allows for rapid failover. Ping testing shows only two ping packets dropped when the primary link goes down, the jump in latency is due to traffic going over a fixed wireless link instead of fibre. This should mean that all channels stay up in the event of an Internet service outage. The VPS does become a single point of failure but I think this is less likely to go down for an extended period of time than the home Internet services. image View quoted note →

Sparkling water flavoured with native Australian ingredients. No sugar or other artificial sweeteners or flavours. They taste good and seem like a much better alternative to sugary drinks or consuming too much alcohol at this time of year. image

Work is over for the year and I’ve got a couple of weeks off until 6th January. Last year I was working and on call over this time, but this year I’m going to try to disconnect completely from anything work related. Logged out of Slack, disabled Opsgenie notifications (hopefully..) and I already avoided putting work email and teams on my phone. There are a couple of people who can call me or message on signal if anything is seriously wrong but that is about it.

Very impressive Christmas light show synchronised to music. For anyone interested the technology behind these types of displays, they are built with strips or strings of individually addressable LED pixels allowing the colour of each pixel to be controlled. The pixel strips/strings are driven by ethernet connected pixel controllers using E1.31 (a protocol for sending DMX lighting control over IP). Open source software such as xLights or Vixen Lights allows the pixels to be grouped into the elements of the display, and effects applied to each element to create the sequences synchronised to the music. #christmas
