Weird realization. Trump controls the nukes and the entire US army but can’t own a pistol. The fact that every felon is deprived of their second amendment rights seems wacky. Regardless of whether you think Trump should have been convicted it’s hard to imagine that someone who commits business fraud is really a physical danger to society and needs to be deprived of their right to own a firearm. Take Martha Stuart for example, she’s a felon after convictions of obstruction of justice and perjury in 2004. Again, can you really make a case that she’s so dangerous that she needs to be deprived of her rights? We already make these kinds of distinctions with misdemeanors. Some misdemeanors are worse than others and should be treated as such. For example the case of Lange v. California said that police can’t always chase a fleeing misdemeanant into their house because some misdemeanors are incredibly minor (like littering). A minor and non-violent offense is not enough reason to override your rights. Why don’t we make this distinction with felonies? Obviously if you are violent then that’s a great reason to take away your right to own a gun, but felonies are a broad spectrum and it doesn’t seem right to take that standard all the way to the non-violent end of the spectrum.

https://openai.com/index/introducing-4o-image-generation/ Open AI is getting slower and slower on actually releasing the products they demo. They’re finally releasing GPT 4o’s full capabilities, a model they demoed nearly a year ago. The question then is, is it truly taking a year to iron out all the details? Or are they feeling the pressure from the competition and demoing half baked capabilities?

Whenever I’m unsure about a decision, making a multi-variable weighted score for each option makes me feel better. Suddenly the stress of too many options fades away and you’re faced with a nicely sorted and objective list with a single number per option.

If you make a device that could go in someone's room, please please please don't have it flash blue lights when it's turned off. I swear my Acer monitor is purposely attempting to ruin my sleep.

Just realized that the owner of the most popular porn sites in the world is based in Montreal. Canada has the nuclear option in a trade war with the US.

Trump in 2024 “It's crazy. You can solve problems over the telephone. Instead, they start dropping bombs. I see, recently, they're dropping bombs all over Yemen. You don't have to do that. You can talk in such a way where they respect you and they listen to you,” Trump in 2025 “Today, I have ordered the United States Military to launch decisive and powerful Military action against the Houthi terrorists in Yemen,” https://rollcall.com/factbase/trump/transcript/donald-trump-interview-tim-pool-irl-podcast-may-27-2024/ https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/114167864888304754

Why does Windows have such an ugly first install impression? When you boot up a new Windows computer you’re greeted with the ugliest Windows XP looking window of all time. Even stock Ubuntu makes a better first impression. Booting a new Mac for the first time feels like a slightly sacred ritual because Apple just does simple things like show an artsy “hello” and has a clean onboarding interface. Why can’t Microsoft do that?

What I say: “I just debugged and fixed our network issues. After some testing I figured out it was the Ethernet switch and I fixed that.” What I mean: “I unplugged and replugged everything and it started working when I replugged the switch.”

Some solid LLM predictions. Not completely convinced though on how bearish the analysis of reasoning models is for two reasons. 1. There are a lot of fields where problem solving verification in training is an option. 2. I think it probably is possible to generalize the abstract text patterns of reasoning and analysis so the model can use them in domains it hasn’t been specifically trained in to improve performance. https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/oKAFFvaouKKEhbBPm/a-bear-case-my-predictions-regarding-ai-progress
