I like to know that I am able to hunt, kill, clean, and cook the meat, but I’m grateful that I don’t always have to.

I have returned from Swannanoa. Probably won’t post much about it until I go back, which I will. Be encouraged that most folks, (myself included) ignored the Fed and are still tending to family, friends, and neighbors. My father-in-law just texted to let us know that power turned back on in east Asheville. No word on running water. I am eternally grateful for the donations; they made a bad situation less bad, and helped me get that truck home. Thank you. #helene #asheville

Headed home tomorrow. Samaritan’s Purse might have saved my wife’s parent’s house. There has been a large and much appreciated government presence in the rescue and recovery efforts here, but local churches have led the way in keeping most folks alive. Thank you all for your prayers and thoughts, and whatever help or funding you’ve provided. The work of rebuilding Swannanoa has only just begun, and I will be back with the truck, I just don’t know exactly when.

45 confirmed dead in Swannanoa and Black Mountain. Spoke with a city employee who guesses that number will go up drastically. Many bodies still in trees since the water rose more that 35ft.

My father in law says that there are two reservoirs upriver of Swannanoa. After two days of heavy rain saturated the ground nearby, they were simultaneously let out on Friday, causing a flash flood through the valley. I don’t have much access to maps to explain this fully, but it seems that the flooding wasn’t just from the hurricane, but there were man-made factors involved.

I’ve been passed by a number of Asheville bound vehicles packed with supplies, which is encouraging. Will be arriving after nightfall, so I will post more about what I see tomorrow.

My sister and I are headed down to western NC to deliver water to my wife’s family and whoever else we can. Was pleasantly surprised to find that a pallet of water is only $200.

RIP Camille. She fed my family with her milk for years, and she will be sorely missed. I’m not Hindu, but I think cows are sacred for the life they give.
