Alright my quail people, we have questions!
What setups do you have for them?
What temps do they handle well without supplemental heat? We don't get below 0.
What fodder do they like? We don't just want to feed feed.
Any other tips you have we're looking at getting some soon, for both meat and eggs. We've done a lot of reading and talking talking with the one person who had them but putting it out to the masses.

My husband and I live on our 40 acre off-grid homestead in Northeastern Arizona, we're frugally building it up from raw land to our dream homestead. We sell small batch herbal tea blends. My husband is a Journeyman Inside Wireman and former law enforcement. I'm a recovering corporate drone (HR). Follow along to see us build out our homestead and businesses.

So excited my artichokes are coming up, now we'll see if I can successfully overwinter them.

Tell me you have a lab without telling me you have a lab... finding firewood in random places, this is definitely not near the firewood stack...
#grownostr #labsofnostr #dogstr #firewood #labradorretriever #dogs #offgrid #homesteadingLiving in the high desert off-grid comes with some unique parts of living that aren't discussed much outside of our communities. One of these is water hauling, which we had to do today. It's pretty cheap, it's about $2.50 to fill an 330 gallon IBC tote and the fill area is about 25 minutes from our property.
We'll eventually have a well drilled but it's a hefty price tag, going rate in our are is $50,000 for a 300ft well. So first we'll put in rainwater catchment, better for our garden then the we'll water anyways, not anywhere near as hard as the we'll water is.

The border collie really wanted me to follow him into the ravine but I really didn't want to chance seeing a rattlesnake. I'm ready for spring but not rattlesnake season yet.

The lab thinks he's coming with us to haul water!

No freezes in the forecast, little over two weeks till my last frost do I chance direct sowing some frost tend plants?

GM from the high desert! Beautiful clear skies this morning!Vent! I just want the local cattle ranchers to understand that if they irradicate one of the few native nitrogen fixers because it is toxic to the cattle that they are still harming their cattle because the grasses will not grow as well or as nutritious without that nitrogen in the soil??? This area used to have amazing grass but because it's over grazed and the native nitrogen fixer is being irradicated, we're now up to 1 head of cattle per 40 acres without the use of supplemental feeding.

The starts of our worm farm. We helped some friends clean out some junk from around their house and they gave us four freezers, two are chest freezers. Just cleaned it out with orange peel vinegar and letting it vent now. It has a lid we just took it off to clean easier.
Now we're trying to figure out if we are going to vent it or not. We don't get terribly hot, we stay under 100 in the summer but can get down to 0 in the winter.
What are your pros and cons for adding or not adding vents on your worm farms...

First garden bed complete, minus some earthworks around it to retain water for when monsoon season hits. We added worm castings and compost to counter the higher ph that the native soil has. We'll be adding some bio-char to the bed soon, just need to make some more first.
This bed has Jerusalem Artichokes, Comfrey and strawberries. The Jerusalem Artichokes will help act as a wind block for the rest of the garden. We have a lot of grasses so instead of buying straw for mulch I just collected some of the dried grasses.

Our evening primrose decided to bloom this morning! Once it has gone to seed, I'm going to try them to see if it tastes similar to other evening primrose seedpods. Evening Primrose is anti-inflammatory and making a poultice can help with reducing swelling.

I have lived at high elevation and baked without issue but sourdough has me slightly nervous. I had a starter years ago but it was gifted and we were only at 3,000ft not almost 6,000ft. Any tips/ tricks would be greatly appreciated!
