One of the more curious aspects of the current debate around restricting social media for younger users is that it may be occurring in the aftermath of one of the largest expansions of everyday literacy in history. The printing press increased access to written language. Social media did something different. It gave billions of people a reason to read and write every day. Not because literacy was considered virtuous. Not because institutions encouraged it. But because reading and writing became embedded in conversation, status, friendship, entertainment, and participation. Whatever one thinks about social media, it is difficult to ignore the irony. We may be debating restrictions precisely when written participation has become a daily activity for unprecedented numbers of people. History rarely unfolds according to the purposes originally assigned to a technology. The printing press certainly didn't.

Some ideas acquire followers. Others acquire a motorcycle gang.

I've been wondering whether the most interesting thing about #NOSTR is not censorship resistance, the ability to transact financially, or data ownership, but the randomness of the experience itself. In real life, we only ever encounter a tiny fragment of what Michael Oakeshott called "the conversation of mankind." That fragment emerges through accidents: who we meet, when and where we live, and what we happen to read. Algorithmically driven social media changed this. The fragment is no longer discovered. It is selected. NOSTR feels different. I still see only a tiny part of the conversation, but the part I see seems to emerge from chance encounters, relationships, timing, and curiosity rather than optimization. The difference may be larger than it first appears.

I've started wondering whether circulation ation requires authority. Perhaps we've spent so much time asking what money is that we've neglected to ask who gets to decide where it goes.

Nostr doesn't make people more intelligent. It simply removes enough noise for intelligence to become visible. Nostr detaches speech from platforms. Bitcoin detaches issuance from states. Pegged asks whether allocation can be detached from judgment. That is why I’m here.

Choosing Nostr over X feels a bit like taking a side road. Not because it's better. Because it costs something. And things that cost nothing rarely reveal conviction.
