Hay is Gay: 15 minutes a day to reclaim pasture. 15 minutes a day with my loppers to make a shade spot on this severely deteriorated hay field cutting mostly invasive species and thorny trees. This happens on the edge of fields because each year the tractor driver drives further and further away from the edge of the forest. Don't get me wrong, hay is a necessary evil in many cases when you get started on such shitty soils. However I feed hay for 3 months MAX whereas most farmers in this area are using it 6 months and also graze my hay fields so they get fertilized by animal urine and poo. Most hay people either use chemicals or don't fertilize at all. This field is full of invasivs and broomsedge(poverty grass) because of shitty stewardship by the previous caretaker. I think after 5 or so more years I should be able to "Kick the Hay Habit" (good book go read it). #permaculture
