Former Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D) is leaning heavily into economic issues in her campaign for governor of Virginia as Democrats seek a winning blueprint going into next year’s midterm elections. 🇺🇸 Virginia’s gubernatorial race has become a split screen of sorts, with Spanberger touting the economy as her main issue and Lt. Gov. Winsome Earl-Sears (R) focusing on cultural issues.
US consumer spending was solid in August but economists expect spending to slow by the end of the year because of escalating higher prices from tariffs and inflation, and anticipate that labor market sluggishness will encourage an increase in precautionary savings by Americans. Though there has not been a broad rise in inflation, there has been a surge in prices of some goods exposed to tariffs. Businesses have been selling inventory accumulated before the tariffs kicked in, preventing inflation from spiraling out of control. Producers have also been absorbing some of the tariffs. Economists don’t expect this trend to continue indefinitely and expect businesses will at some point later this year pass on the tariffs to consumers on a wider scale as pre-tariff inventories were drawn down in the second quarter. 🇺🇸

An interesting study that looked at how often major LLMs gave accurate advice about diet and exercise compared to established cardiology guidelines. Overall the LLMs advice correlated 80-90% with established guidelines. The results suggest that patients may be able to use LLMs for general advice about cardiology related diet and exercise, but should still discuss with their cardiology team specific diet and exercise advice for their own personal situation.
The Trump Administration looms over many up coming elections, including New Jersey's race for governor 🇺🇸 Democratic Rep. Mikie Sherrill worked to tie Republican Jack Ciattarelli to the Trump Administration, while Ciattarelli stressed his independence from the White House while defending some of the Trump Administration’s signature moves Sunday night.
The New Jersey race, along with the governor’s race in Virginia could provide early clues for how voters are responding to the Trump Administration. Trump, who has endorsed Ciattarelli, lost both states by 6 percentage points last year.
