Like in real archeology, once in a while you find your "stone of rosette" in software archeology too, in my special case it was a CD, innocently named "Projektdaten 2001", quietly and forgotten sitting in a box of perhaps 50 similar CDs in the farthest corner of our archives... I have no idea why I tried this specific CD as first but it was a surpring hit:
The complete source code and documentation for our ancient, mission critical but broken software.

Its a rainy, cold day where I am, seems like fall has really arrived... but somehow I like this sort of weather. It always triggers memories from my childhood, sitting in front of the C64 learning Basic or playing games in the green glow of the - even for the time - ancient monitor that was handed down to me.
#gm everybody! I guess you really shouldn't look into the net before breakfast... it kills the appetite...

[tor-relays] Artikel 5 e.V. - Another police raid in Germany - general assembly on Sep 21st 2024
Hello to all list-reading entities! On Aug 16th 2024 German police considered it once again appropriate to raid the home&office at the registered ...
Just digging ever deeper into the thought processes of the developers of our ancient, but mission critical software... i must confess: This type of "software archeology" is somehow enormously interesting
#gm everyone! Man, yesterday was one of those days... in a way, after entering the office, everything felt like being in an active warzone. But the problems were solved, the waves smoothed out and today sitting at the desk somehow feels like being on a ship that just weathered a major storm.
Now, I hope this day will only bring calm and smooth waves...
#GM everyone! Today the sky has "the color of a television, tuned to a dead channel", the ideal weather to grab a coffee, park oneself in the front of the computer and start solving problems
Today I commited heresy... at least if you consider the believe system of my ~18 year old self. What horrible deed did I commit? Well, I installed a windows system.
I think I have to mention: i didn't own (or used for more time than it takes to start putty) a windows system since the days of Half-Life 2, edonkey and affordable Döner. Well, due to some circumstances I will have to deal with windows in the near future so I decided to just try it out. I had this oldish Asus Laptop at work which sat in its original box, awaiting an uncertain future. As a little weekend project I grabbed it, installed windows 10 on it and just tried it out a bit.
The weird (and very surprising) thing is: I like it.
Here I am, a Linux user for about 20 years and I write I like windows... that's a thing I have to process :-D
Ja, er hat ne Macke... aber verdammt, seine Macke gefällt mir (hier bitte manisches Lachen imaginären):
Spending the afternoon further cleaning up the old barn, it's absolutely astounding how much GARBAGE a few generations can accumulate if there is a big open and unused space...
Ich bin wirklich kein Fan von dem Ding was mal Twitter war, aber ich bin noch weniger Fan von der Art in der wir uns einer "Great European Firewall" (oder sollte man das besser e-Limes nennen?) annähern...

Finished the #100pushups now as wife and son are already asleep, this morning 2x25 with 90 seconds in between and the same now again.
Today son and I build a cat gerbil wheel for grandmother's cat... well, it looks like he is a born craftsman ;-)

#GM everyone! Since the terror attempt in Munich yesterday the cries for more rights for the police, more surveillance and so on are getting louder... more and more people are willing to sacrifice liberties for the illusion of more security.
Just this morning a coworker told me in earnest that we need something like the great Chinese firewall to 'get the lunatics under control'... wtf...
Well, what a day, just too much of everything, too much excitement, too much work, too much fun, too much anger... i think I call it off early today, there is nothing to be gained staying out of bed for much longer...
I seemingly hit the same motivational low every day around 12:00 - 14:00... at once every task becomes a burden and every thought is slow and cumbersome. I somehow need to fix that.
At least I have got some grip on our "tech debt problem" and the first offers from external help are flowing in. Well, let's just say, fixing things late really ain't cheap ;-)
Our son is mutating into an early bird it seems... he woke up at exactly 06:00 and proudly showed that he learned a new word: "Papa, Liegestütz!" ("Daddy, pushups!"), and put that in loop until i hit the ground to begin the #100pushups. Well, nothing beats a motivating family ;-)
#GM everybody!
Finally, in the evening the temperatures got better. Did a nice bicycle ride with wife and kid after work, first one for junior... he really liked it, so I guess this will become a regular thing. Let's hope the summer stays a while longer.

Its... just too warm and humid for my taste, and especially for my brain to function properly. Working on my projects (especially the one regarding the tech debt problem of the company) somehow feel like walking through molasses...
I took a break and I am now trying to figure out how to build a small nostr client prototype to tinker with... i have some ideas...
#GM everybody! Its a warm, humid and very overcast morning here in my part of the world, son woke up early, and made the decision that his parents also had slept enough.
Well, "no rest for the wicked" I guess...
After leaving the bed I decided its time to get more methodical regarding the #100pushups so I hit the floor and did 3 x 25 with about five minutes in between, after that I was quiet out of power, but a short cold shower and breakfast brought the energy back online.
At my office the first thing I did was to hit the ground again (praise the single office!), managed to get 10 pushups done with proper form and finished the last 15 as desk pushups... well, I think technically that counts as 100.
Plan now is to simply repeat everyday and work on better form.
