The current NPM attack which swaps out receive addresses on the fly to similar looking addresses that the attacker has control over should be a big wake up call to everyone. You should always be checking every single character for every single transaction. No exceptions. The fact that address skimming has been so normalized is bizarre, especially in a culture that claims to value low time preference thinking so highly. Why's everyone in such a rush? Slow down.
