I also tend to think that I or my life will change in a certain (optimistic) way, without making any meaningful s̲̲t̲̲e̲̲p̲̲s̲̲ in that direction. Bad, bad habit. It goes hand in hand with making p̲̲r̲̲o̲̲m̲̲i̲̲s̲̲e̲̲s̲̲. Don't make promises guys, just don't. You're just adding disappointment and dispair, guilt and shame. Instead of "allowing" kids to watch the TV when they are "done" with homework, consider awarding them with r̲̲e̲̲s̲̲o̲̲u̲̲r̲̲c̲̲e̲̲s̲̲ they can play with and build value on their own. This way, they may discover their talents much earlier and build a h̲̲a̲̲b̲̲i̲̲t̲̲ o̲̲f̲̲ a̲̲c̲̲t̲̲i̲̲v̲̲i̲̲t̲̲y̲̲ and recognize passivity as the detriment it truly is. Their nervous systems will be wired to create a life worth living, day by day. P̲̲a̲̲s̲̲s̲̲i̲̲v̲̲e̲̲ s̲̲t̲̲i̲̲m̲̲u̲̲l̲̲a̲̲n̲̲t̲̲s̲̲ like TV and algorithmic videos on the other hand groom them to tune out at the slightest inconvenience, and put them on media-induced endogenous o̲̲p̲̲i̲̲o̲̲i̲̲d̲̲s̲̲. This hits development even hardest when they cannot even speak yet, as many incentives for speech (like playful interaction) are eliminated by digital surrogates like the YouTube toddler shows on mama's s̲̲m̲̲a̲̲r̲̲t̲̲p̲̲h̲̲o̲̲n̲̲e̲̲ every single day.
