# The Coin
# With No Face
> *You shall not have in your bag differing weights, a large and a small. You shall have a perfect and just weight, a perfect and just measure.*
>
> — Deuteronomy 25:13–15
Money is a weight. It measures the value of your labor, your time, your life's productive energy. When the weight is honest, it preserves what you put into it. When it is not, someone is skimming from every transaction, every quiet act of saving. And the skim is invisible to those who don't know where to look.
For most of history, the weights have not been honest. Kings clipped coins. Governments diluted silver. Central banks expand the supply of currency, gently and never-endingly, and call it policy.
The weight gets lighter. The thing being measured does not.

In the Gospel of Matthew, a group of men try to trap a rabbi with a question about Roman taxes. Say yes and lose the people. Say no and face arrest.
He asks to see the coin. Whose face is on it, he asks. Whose inscription?
*Caesar's, they say.*
Then render unto Caesar what is Caesar's, and unto God what is God's.
He does not answer the question. He reframes it. The coin carries Caesar's image; therefore it carries Caesar's claim. You entered his system the moment you picked up his money. The tax is not the submission. The coin is.
Every currency minted in the twenty centuries since has carried a face. Presidents on dollars. Monarchs on pounds. The technology changed: metal to paper to pixels. But the claim never did. The face on the money says: *this is mine, you use it at my pleasure, and you owe me for the privilege.*

In 2008, someone published a nine-page paper on an obscure cryptography mailing list and then disappeared. Not retired. Not withdrawn. Vanished, so completely that no one knows who Satoshi Nakamoto is, was, or whether the name belongs to one person or several.
This disappearance was not incidental to the work. It was the work's most important feature.
If Satoshi were known, Bitcoin would be Satoshi's coin. His face—metaphorically, if not on the metal—would be stamped on the currency, and with it would come every vulnerability that faces on coins have always carried. You can only cheat the weight if you control the weight, and the face is the mark of control.
By vanishing, Satoshi did something that had never been done in the history of money. He created a currency and removed the creator. No face. No name. No authority to appeal to or threaten.
Twenty-one million coins. No sovereign. The first money no ruler has ever been able to stamp.

There are two ways to lose everything you've saved.
Slowly, so gently you don't notice. The thing you set aside weighs a little less each year, and you blame everything but the scale.
Or all at once. A hand that reaches in and takes it, and doesn't need to pick the lock, because the lock was always his.
There are twenty-one million coins now that fail neither way. They do not erode. No sovereign's hand can seize them. A person can carry them across any border on earth inside twelve words held in memory, and no authority can reach them there.

This is not to confuse a financial instrument with the divine. Bitcoin does not feed the hungry or comfort the grieving or answer the question of what a life is for.
But for so long, the reason that question went unasked by so many is that they were too busy guarding the little they had, too trapped in the anxiety of what they might lose to raise their eyes from the ground. The weight on a man's back is not the treasure itself. It is the fear of losing it.
Someone once drew a line between the treasure that enslaves and the treasure that liberates: between wealth that chains the heart to its own defense and wealth that frees the heart to go where it was meant to go.
For 2000 years, the only treasure safe from both was not of this world.
> *Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.*
>
> — Matthew 6:19–21
