An island at the top of Norway. A door in a mountain: a hundred and thirty metres in, minus eighteen. Shelves, boxes, seeds.
Gene banks send copies of what they grow. The copies sit in the cold, beyond fire, flood, war. Room for four and a half million samples; more than a million inside. Two of the three rooms are still empty.
For seven years, nothing came out.
Then Aleppo. The war left ICARDA's gene bank unable to work, 150,000 samples with nowhere to go. Its copies were in the mountain. In September 2015 the door opened: 38,073 samples went to Lebanon and Morocco, were sown that November and grew. In 2017 the bank came back, and began the return: seeds grown from what it had taken, sent back into the cold. By 2019, 42,729 samples were back, most grown from what it gave.
Built for the end of the world; opened by one war.
Nothing in the mountain was ever the mountain's. It kept by giving back; what it gave came home grown.
