The two Canadians who blocked me on Twitter years ago because I called them out on their El Salvador hype have finally deleted their YouTube channel and X account and, I guess, accepted the truth.
Years ago, I warned them that El Salvador was deceiving everyone. The government’s projects were just propaganda, designed to attract Bitcoiners to move there, buy overpriced real estate, and help turn the country into some kind of "rich paradise" like Singapore. I told them that Singapore is a terrible example, and that El Salvador's government was hiding the fact that their volcanic mining projects weren’t profitable. There were also a lot of other shady things the government was doing that they didn’t disclose.
I also called out those two Canadians for trying to convince Bitcoiners that they could get rich by buying into Bitaxle, a scammy project that was nothing more than a way to line their own pockets.
Fast forward to today, and we’ve seen the inevitable failure of El Salvador’s Bitcoin experiment. The country did manage to attract some Bitcoiners, but it’s clear that the plan never worked. I've said it before: Was this really Max Keiser’s idea? To lure Bitcoiners into thinking they could turn El Salvador into a successful, wealthy nation?
The plan was doomed from the start. Many Bitcoiners are young and not interested in retiring to a place like El Salvador; they want to build, work, and grow. And even if you did want El Salvador to become a superpower, that would require massive investments in energy infrastructure. That’s something only large corporations with billions of dollars and decades of experience can handle—definitely not a small government like El Salvador’s.
The government tried, but they failed. And I saw their lies from the beginning. I fought hard to expose the truth, and many Bitcoiners in the comments were calling them out for pushing an unrealistic, rosy view of El Salvador. They only showed the beautiful beaches and surfing spots without mentioning the slow adoption of Bitcoin or the tiny wages most people there earn.
I think many Bitcoiners still don’t understand economics. They don’t realize that Bitcoin alone can’t save a country when the global economy is dominated by fiat currency.
But I’m glad that, finally, these two Canadians have come to terms with the reality of the situation. I do find it strange, though, that it took them deleting their entire channel to do so. They could have just made a video explaining the change in their views. It seems like there’s a lot of pressure, especially when you have a large following. People might be too afraid to speak the truth when it goes against the government narrative.
It’s also worth noting that, as much as people want to romanticize El Salvador as "Bitcoin country," it’s still a government. And criticizing governments is a risky move, especially when they’re trying to use Bitcoin to build their vision of a national economy.
Of course, it's typical for governments to use taxpayer money to fund projects like Chivo Wallet and Bitcoin City, only for them to fail in the long run.
So, what do you think? Do you believe the El Salvador government genuinely cares about Bitcoin, or do they have more nefarious motives?
As for the two Canadians, I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt. Maybe they just didn’t have the critical thinking skills to see through it all because they are Canadian. They probably trusted their own Canadian government in the beginning, then moved on to trust another government’s promises, which in the end didn’t deliver.
El Salvador was never Bitcoin country, and it never will be because Bitcoin doesn’t belong to any country. It’s decentralized by design, and that’s one of the things that makes it so revolutionary. Bitcoin doesn’t need a government or a nation-state to function; it’s a global, borderless network that exists independently of politics or geography.
