The 2025 AI Index Report is a comprehensive, data-driven view into the current state of AI, released by Stanford HAI. Here are some of the top takeaways that stand out to me. "AI’s growing importance is reflected in major scientific awards: two Nobel Prizes recognized work that led to deep learning (physics), and to its application to protein folding (chemistry), while the Turing Award honored groundbreaking contributions to reinforcement learning." "In 2024, U.S. private AI investment grew to $109.1 billion—nearly 12 times China’s $9.3 billion..." "While the U.S. maintains its lead in quantity, Chinese models have rapidly closed the quality gap: performance differences on major benchmarks such as MMLU and HumanEval shrank from double digits in 2023 to near parity in 2024." "In countries like China (83%) ... strong majorities see AI products and services as more beneficial than harmful. In contrast, optimism remains far lower in places like the United States (39%)" You can read more about #AI here: https://hai.stanford.edu/ai-index/2025-ai-index-report

I’ll talk to people about meditation and they will say something like “oh I can’t do that. I can’t focus or I can’t sit still”, and my response is “that’s exactly the point.” #Meditation is a moment to explore what it is that refuses stillness, and exploring beyond into that stillness. There’s nothing to fail or succeed at. It’s an opportunity to sit with “you” and learn about yourself more intimately.

Today’s fallacy: Appeal to the People Argumentum ad populum is a type of informal fallacy,[1][14] specifically a fallacy of relevance,[15][16] and is similar to an argument from authority (argumentum ad verecundiam).[14][4][9] It uses an appeal to the beliefs, tastes, or values of a group of people,[12] stating that because a certain opinion or attitude is held by a majority, or even everyone, it is therefore correct.[12][17] Appeals to popularity are common in commercial advertising that portrays products as desirable because they are used by many people[9] or associated with popular sentiments[18] instead of communicating the merits of the products themselves. One of my core childhood memories is ssh’ing into one of my Linux laptops from another room. Having that power to do “spooky action at a distance” really excited something in me
