Very interesting debate. Thinking about this: We will never build something the scale of Twitter with the relay structure that we have right now. Twitter generates 12 Terabytes of data per day. There is no way that relay operators will store all of this for all of time for free. This is natural. A decentralised system will always be more expensive and wasteful than a centralised system. I am actually PAYING MONEY for a SaaS that deletes my tweets after a week (although I have no doubt that the NSA stores it all for eternity anyways). It seems, we need to rethink what "social media" is supposed to do: It is supposed to be a network to spread information quickly around the globe. Something like a digital neural network. It is maybe NOT supposed to be long term memory as well. Maybe if we want to create a lasting legacy of content, we need to find other systems. A self hosted personal blog would be the obvious way - if we can circumvent the need for the centralized and censorable DNS system (Tor etc), that would be good enough for censorship resistant long form content. So I think, if Nostr relays by default only store events of the last 30 days, that would be good enough - AND EVEN THAT would still be infeasible for all but the largest and well funded relays if we would reach Twitter scale. If you don't have time to watch 8 hours of two autists mumbling at each other, I have posted a summary of the recent Lex Fridman - Elon Musk podcast: (see linked comment in the comments section)

Can @Primal or Nostr in general support something like Twitter's lists? Having one big chronological timeline gets too much to read once you follow around 200 people. Sorting them into lists and then reading about a specific topic is one way to manage information overload (and to remember why I followed someone). #asknostr

In @primal , how do I control the amount of sats sent when I zap? The zap settings menu has various amounts shown, but only the topmost one seems to be used? Tapping the lightning under a post does not trigger any menu but just zap 42sats (I already accidentally zapped while just scrolling the timeline). #asknostr

Been using Nostr heavily for a week now. The difference in tone and attitude is striking. Virtually every post on X is negative, aggressive, insulting. Almost all posts on Nostr are positive, respectful, motivating. This is how Twitter used to be when I was knee deep in web-dev. Using Nostr instead of X is definitely healing for the brain. No brain can withstand the 24/7/365 barrage of doom and gloom on Twitter without getting its chemistry out of whack.
