The prophet Samuel, when he went to anoint King David, almost anointed his older brother — Eliab — because of appearance. He was tall, imposing, looked like a king. It was then that God rebuked him: "Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." God was not praising that limitation — He was naming it. Machiavelli named the same thing centuries later. In chapter XVIII of The Prince, he wrote: "Everyone can see what you appear to be, few can touch what you are."
