At the 3:04 mark of the track below, Aphex Twin offers us a glimpse at the sample he used to craft the entire seminal work that is Bucephalus Bouncing Ball. It sounds like a marble or ball bearing hitting a glass table.
You read that right: he used that sample to craft the entire song, using now free software called Composers Desktop Project
It’s janky and dated and to my knowledge, nothing else exists (almost 30 years later, that does what it does.
Here’s the rub (and the proof of work): there was no GUI for Composers Desktop Project when this was written. It would have all be done via command line. I cannot imagine even attempting to recreate this in #Ableton, much less conjuring up the ideas and executing every beat division and tone with command prompts, and no influence to draw from. What a legend.
