I visit Lemmy regularly, and one of the topics that come around almost all the time is "how do I get my circle of friends and family out of WhatsApp and into something more private like (insert any messaging platform you believe to be private and secure)?
Well, I came around a very good option by accident, and I apologize beforehand for the long post:
My family and I just moved to a city about 3 hours away from where our relatives live, and our relatives (both on my wife's side of the family and mine) have a very close relationship with my kids, to the point that they would almost fight each other to spend time with my 2 little rascals.
About 3 days ago I got each of my kids a mobile phone (Android), and before I gave them said devices, I went through the process of u installing/disabling everything mainstream that was pre-installed (Everything Google, Samsung stuff, etc), and installed and configured Molly (Signal client for those that don't know) on each device.
I already had managed to bring the people I care about over to Signal (only my daughter has Simplex, and uses it with me and her friends), mostly my side of the family and my mother in law from my wife's side.
Well, my wife's relatives started seeing as my MIL is now always in contact with her grandchildren, and since I won't allow my kids to use any mainstream so-called "services", the only option they had was calling my kids.
Between Monday and Tuesday of this week, 12 people installed and configured Signal in their phones to be able to chat, video call and otherwise interact with my kids remotely.
It may not be much, but if big tech and scamers can use people's emotional side to their advantage, so can we, even if it was by accident.
Good morning wonderful people. Today I woke up to read this phrase in an article, and thought I'd share with everyone:
"You don’t have to be great to get started, but you have to get started to be great."
Some people will tell you to be cautious (nothing wrong with that), but we need to take action, risk failing miserably, and that will lead us to where we really want to be at some point.
It's a hard stance to take, and even harder to" just close your eyes and jump in", and that's the beauty of it. That's how we live life 1 day at a time.
