According to a report by Fox News, the United States Navy is preparing to deploy a third carrier strike group to the Middle East in the coming weeks amid tensions with Iran. The USS George H. W. Bush (CVN-77) and its carrier strike group have completed their Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX) and are expected to depart from Naval Station Norfolk before the end of March for a regularly scheduled deployment to the United States Fifth Fleet area of responsibility. However, due to ongoing hostilities with Iran, it remains unclear whether the carrier will replace the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78)—which entered the Red Sea on Thursday and has been deployed for nearly 11 months—or arrive as additional reinforcement for U.S. naval forces in the region. image

Vladimir Putin spoke with his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian today. According to a statement from the Russian president’s office, the two leaders held a routine exchange, with Putin expressing support for Iran and offering condolences for the loss of senior decision-makers. The statement also said that Russia maintains a “principled stance in favor of an immediate cessation of hostilities and the rejection of force as a method to solve any issues.” That position appears to contradict credible reports suggesting Russia has been providing Iran with targeting information related to U.S. bases and infrastructure across the region.

Reporter: You said on Fox that it doesn’t really matter if Russia is providing Iran with information about military assets. Why doesn’t it matter? Karoline Leavitt: It clearly isn’t making any difference to the military operations in Iran, because we are completely decimating them.

According to Israeli news reports, Israel believes Azerbaijan may launch strikes against Iran or join the broader coalition responding to Tehran, following Iranian strikes inside Azerbaijan yesterday. Azerbaijan’s close ties with Turkey—and especially Israel—have long strained its relationship with neighboring Iran. Tehran, in turn, maintains strong ties with Russia and Armenia, countries that Azerbaijan increasingly finds itself at odds with. image

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha announced that Ukrainian banking officials are currently briefing EU and US ambassadors about the recent incident in Hungary. He attributes "Russian handwriting" to the events, pointing to recent visits by Hungarian officials to Moscow as part of a broader pattern of provocations aimed at escalating tensions. This comes amid Kyiv's strong accusations that Hungarian authorities detained seven Oschadbank employees (who were transporting cash and valuables through Hungary) in what Ukraine describes as hostage-taking and theft, with demands for their immediate release and international accountability.

Seyyed Ali Asghar Hejazi, Deputy Chief of Staff in the office of Ali Khamenei, has reportedly been targeted. Hejazi was far more than just the chief of staff in the Supreme Leader’s office. For years he was considered one of the most influential figures in Khamenei’s inner circle and oversaw security for the Leader’s office. Since the late 1990s, many presidential security powers were transferred to him, including responsibilities tied to countering regime opponents. He worked closely with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the Ministry of Intelligence (Iran), and the judiciary, and frequently acted as Khamenei’s envoy on sensitive political and security matters, relaying messages to the heads of the three branches of government. image
