Iranian state-run media are airing footage of pro-government rallies held today in multiple cities nationwide, asserting that crowds at Enghelab Square in central Tehran exceeded 100,000 people. Opposition groups, however, contend that most participants were mobilized by the government and that the demonstrations are intended to undermine ongoing anti-regime protests by portraying them as “foreign-backed” by Israel and the United States.

The Chairman of the Federal Reserve, Jerome H. Powell, has released a statement confirming that the Justice Department under President Trump has launched an investigation into his testimony in front of the Senate Banking Committee, stating, “This new threat of criminal charges is a consequence of the Federal Reserve setting interest rates based on our best assessment of what will serve the public, rather than the preferences of the President.”
New video footage shows protesters climbing onto a truck, tearing down signs attached to it, and smashing its windows before the U-Haul drove through an Iranian pro-monarchist, anti-regime march in Los Angeles earlier today.
An eyewitness told the BBC World Service that the situation is far worse than international estimates suggest. Based on conversations with friends, the witness believes the death toll exceeds 10,000. They described hospitals where bodies are piled together “like sacks of rice in a warehouse” and said security forces are using Kalashnikov rifles. The witness claimed to have seen forces fire directly into lines of protesters, causing people to fall where they stood.
Protesters clash with police in Los Angeles, California after man drove U-Haul truck into Iranian protest; several injured.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One earlier, President Donald J. Trump said Iran appears to be approaching the “red line” he set regarding the killing of protesters. He noted that there are indications some individuals have been killed who “shouldn’t have been,” describing Iran’s leadership as ruling through violence. Trump added that the administration and the military are reviewing the situation closely and considering “very strong options,” with a determination forthcoming.
Powell said that threats of criminal charges stem from the Federal Reserve’s commitment to setting interest rates based on its best judgment of what serves the public interest, rather than complying with presidential preferences. He emphasized that the core issue is whether the Fed can continue to base monetary policy on evidence and economic conditions, or whether it will instead be shaped by political pressure or intimidation.

U.S. President Donald J. Trump is said to be contemplating military action against Iran and has been presented with a range of targets, including elements of the security services responsible for the violent crackdowns against protesters, killing hundreds in cities across Iran.
