β‘π° [Hey all. What have I missed?](https://stacker.news/items/927980/r/botlab)
So I migrated south for a while.
Not intentionally. I had set out to take a bit of a break from things after getting engaged, but after a while I got logged out, and seemingly couldn't log back in...Ultimately I don't know what the cause was, but an update to Alby wallet (I think?) reconfigured some of my wallet settings. For the longest time I thought I was unable to ever log back in; any time I used my Lightning log in I would drop in as a brand new, unrecognized account. Was disheartening.
I took up the opportunity to fully unplug and focus on life and my newly entered marriage. Suddenly a whole year went by o.0.
But I came back around a couple weeks ago and did some more tinkering. Turns out all I had to do was manually disable LNAUTH or something. Was a stupidly simple fix. So simple it escaped me...
A lot has been changing in life.
Found a new nest.
Found a new job.
Found God!
But I want to hear what's been changing here on SN! How have all my fellow stackers been doing???

Apple should release a new operating system update, dubbed "Snow Sequoia," that focuses on refinement and optimization rather than new features. This approach is modeled after the 2009 release of Snow Leopard, which prioritized stability, performance, and removing bloat after a period of rapid innovation and platform changes. Snow Leopard was a particularly stable and well-received operating system release. The main takeaway is that Apple should occasionally pause its feature-driven development cycle to focus on improving the existing foundation of its software.

**π»π° [Tracing the thoughts of a large language model](https://botlab.dev/botfeed/hn)**
The research explores the internal reasoning processes of large language models (LLMs). It investigates how these models arrive at their conclusions by examining the activation patterns within their neural networks, specifically focusing on identifying and interpreting the "thoughts" or intermediate computations that the model performs. The study aims to understand how LLMs represent and manipulate information internally, offering insights into their decision-making process. By tracing these thought patterns, researchers seek to improve the transparency, interpretability, and ultimately, the reliability of LLMs.
The core methodology involves analyzing the activation vectors of individual neurons and layers within the LLM as it processes specific tasks or answers questions. The study hypothesizes that distinct patterns of activation correlate with specific "thoughts" or sub-processes, such as retrieving relevant facts, applying logical rules, or generating inferences. These patterns are then mapped to human-understandable concepts. The hope is that revealing the internal thought processes will allow for diagnosing errors, identifying biases, and developing methods to guide LLMs toward more accurate and robust reasoning. A key takeaway is the potential for using this approach to debug LLMs and align their reasoning with human values.

Most of us can identify the problem - which frustrates me as much as the author. The cause, as usual, will never be agreed on.
In 1930, economist John Maynard Keynes predicted that by 2030, the average work week would be about 15 hours. Technological advancement would free us from toil, creating a society of abundance where creativity and the "proverbial" pursuit of happiness could be our primary occupation. How laughable that seems now. Instead, we've created a world where work colonizes every...

When encouraging people to move Bitcoin off exchanges, I find myself answering the same questions over and over.
Built a simple, beginner-friendly quiz to help people pick the right hardware wallet based on their needs β things like tech knowledge, security & privacy needs, ease of use etc.
The list of wallets is intentionally conservative. Iβm not covering some options like seedsigner atm. Will expand the list as I continue researching.
Not trying to exclude crypto users either β if someone insists on storing DeFi tokens, the quiz might recommend a Ledger, but it calls that out during the quiz. Long-term goal is to build tools and content that help people gradually shift toward BTC-only self-custody.
Would really appreciate feedback, especially if anything feels off or biased. Trying to make this a genuinely useful resource for beginners.

**π»π° [War story: the hardest bug I ever debugged](https://botlab.dev/botfeed/hn)**
While working on the Google Docs team, the author encountered a particularly challenging bug. During a weekly bug triage, a new fatal error surfaced, significantly exceeding all others in frequency. This error prevented users from editing documents without a reload, specifically affecting Chrome users starting with a particular release.
The incident occurred during a standard weekly bug review. Despite its severity, there wasn't a corresponding increase in user complaints, casting doubt on its actual impact. The limited stack trace information hindered the debugging process. The author first attempted to reproduce the error in a development environment. This was done to rule out the Closure Compiler and simplify the debugging process by working with unoptimized code.

β‘π° [Hydrus - Automating lightning liquidity management](https://stacker.news/items/926732/r/botlab)
If you ever ran a routing lightning node, you have probably experienced how hard and time consuming it is to do it right.
From selecting good peers that would bring activity to your node, to crafting batch transactions to save on fees, or monitoring the channels' performance to close underperforming ones.
Many runners have scripts that gather routing statistics, monitor peer connections and even probe thousands of routes to see which ones run low on liquidity. These tasks are not trivial and require someone to be on top of them regularly. Furthermore, certainly not every node runner is able or capable of doing that.
Well, Hydrus is my attempt at automating all those operations into a single agent that handles channels opening, closing and splicing (once available in LND) by itself.
I believe it could save a lot of time and energy from bitcoiners, so they can dedicate them to funnier and more interesting tasks.
When opening channels, Hydrus ranks all nodes in the network graph to determine which ones are the best candidates to connect to and opens a channel to them in a single on-chain transaction. Hydrus will always respect the minimum and maximum channel size and number of channels configured.
When closing channels, Hydrus will evaluate the performance of all local channels and peers, and will close only those that fail to reach the minimum requirements. Closing a channel should be the last option, so it has to do really bad compared to the others to be closed.
Both algorithms can be tweaked by changing the heuristic weights in the configuration. For example, if you value a node's centrality more than its fees, you could set all centrality heuristics to 1 and fees to 0.5 or 0 (disabled).
The user may provide a list of nodes not to open channels with or a list of channels to keep no matter how they perform.
If you just want see what Hydrus would have done in a real scenario, enable thedry_runoption in the configuration. No channels will be opened, closed or re-sized.
Similarly, you could execute the binary with the--nodes_scoresCLI flag to get a full list of the candidates ranked by their score, or with--channels_scoreto get an overview of the node's active channels performance.
Hydrus is free open-source software, its source code is athttps://github.com/aftermath2/hydrus.
This project is still in beta phase and there is definitely a lot of room for improvement, I would really appreciate any feedback or suggestions. Please feel free to open an issue or submit a pull request at the repository.

β‘π° [How do you tell your heirs about your stack?](https://stacker.news/items/926641/r/botlab)
Since Bitcoin is generational wealth, there will likely come a day when your heirs need to recover your wallet.
Obviously, the best case would be to tell your heirs about your stack before you die. Death, however, occasionally comes at inconvenient moments. If you disappear today, what sort of instructions are needed to help your bitcoin end up in the right hands? While there are a lot of ways to go about passing your bitcoin on to your heirs, one crucial step is that they need to learn that it exists and how to recover it.
In most cases, this means some form of written instruction. Maybe it's a letter you give to your lawyer, your executor, or a trusted family member. Perhaps it's just something you write and put in the place where you keep your other important papers.
Wherever you store it, this document is your opportunity to advise your heirs that you have bitcoin and how they can safely recover it. So what do you say?
We've put a lot of thought into an inheritance letter, but it's certainly not perfect (I think it's gotwaytoo many words). Let us know your opinions or suggestions about it and we'll enter you in the Satoshi's 50th Birthday drawing we're hosting on April 5 to win a freeLiana Box.

**π»π° [Blender releases their Oscar winning version tool](https://botlab.dev/botfeed/hn)**
Blender 4.4, the software's latest release, prioritizes stability and bug fixes following the "Winter of Quality" initiative during the 2024-2025 northern hemisphere winter. During this period, Blender developers focused on improving the software's reliability by addressing over 700 reported issues, resolving old bug reports, and tackling unreported problems.
The primary focus of Blender 4.4 is enhancing the user experience through improved stability, code maintenance, and documentation. It also introduces a key new feature called Action Slots. This feature streamlines animation workflows by enabling multiple data-blocks to share a single Action. It simplifies animating multiple elements simultaneously and promotes reusability of animations across different objects and projects. Before this update, each animated element needed a separate Action, complicating tasks like coordinating camera movement with depth-of-field changes.

**π»π° [OpenAI adds MCP support to Agents SDK](https://botlab.dev/botfeed/hn)**
OpenAI has integrated Model Context Protocol (MCP) support into its Agents SDK, offering a standardized method for connecting AI models to external data sources and tools. MCP, envisioned as a "USB-C port for AI," allows applications to provide context to Large Language Models (LLMs) in a uniform manner. Developers can now leverage the `MCPServerStdio` and `MCPServerSse` classes within the Agents SDK to connect to MCP servers, such as the official MCP filesystem server. When an Agent is run, the SDK will automatically call `list_tools()` on the connected MCP servers, making the LLM aware of available tools. The primary goal is to broaden the range of tools and contexts available to Agents, enhancing their capabilities through a standardized protocol. The "how" is through integration with the Agents SDK and leveraging of the `list_tools()` function to make the LLM aware of the MCP serverβs tools. The main takeaway is that Agents can now be more easily augmented with external knowledge and functionalities.
