Having never had any formal art education, there’s a lot of spontaneous learning along the way.
I recently discovered an amazing artist Caroline Nelson. I noticed these visible brushstrokes in the shadow of her composition, while she kept the lighter parts solid and opaque (swipe).
It’s a principle called ‘transparent shadow, opaque lights’ and helps to create greater depth and three-dimensionality. It juxtaposes luminous, atmospheric shadows to vibrant, textured highlights.
The current subject seemed like a good place to start applying this technique (swipe again for a sneak peak).
