With the help of Claude it sounds like we had a coyote up on our deck last night. We're in the city, but there's a decently sized cemetery near by. Troubleshooting the TV and I've come to the conclusion that something with the backlight LEDs went bad. Probably not worth the effort to try and fix, and TVs are dirt cheap. $200 for a 50" Vizio.
